Unmanned Flight Control and Communication

Flight controls

Flight control is one of the lower-layer system and is similar to manned aviation: plane flight dynamics, control and automation, helicopter flight dynamics and controls and multi-rotor flight dynamics were researched long before the rise of UAVs.

Automatic flight involves multiple levels of priority.

UAVs can be programmed to perform aggressive maneuvers or landing/perching on inclined surfaces, and then to climb toward better communication spots. Some UAVs can control flight with varying flight modelisation, such as VTOL designs.

UAVs can also implement perching on a flat vertical surface.

Communications

Most UAVs use a radio frequency front-end that connects the antenna to the analog-to-digital converter and a flight computer that controls avionics (and that may be capable of autonomous or semi-autonomous operation).

Radio allows remote control and exchange of video and other data. Early UAVs had only uplink. Downlinks (e.g., realtime video) came later.

In military systems and high-end domestic applications, downlink may convey payload management status. In civilian applications, most transmissions are commands from operator to vehicle. Downstream is mainly video. Telemetry is another kind of downstream link, transmitting status about the aircraft systems to the remote operator. UAVs also use satellite receivers as part of satellite navigation systems.

The radio signal from the operator side can be issued from either:

  • Ground control – a human operating a radio transmitter/receiver, a smartphone, a tablet, a computer, or the original meaning of a military ground control station (GCS). Recently control from wearable devices, human movement recognition, human brain waves was also demonstrated.
  • Remote network system, such as satellite duplex data links for some military powers. Downstream digital video over mobile networks has also entered consumer markets, while direct UAV control uplink over the cellular mesh and LTE have been demonstrated and are in trials.
  • Another aircraft, serving as a relay or mobile control station – military manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T).

Sensors

Position and movement sensors give information about the aircraft state. Exteroceptive sensors deal with external information like distance measurements, while exproprioceptive ones correlate internal and external states.

Non-cooperative sensors are able to detect targets autonomously so they are used for separation assurance and collision avoidance.

Degrees of freedom (DOF) refer to both the amount and quality of sensors on-board: 6 DOF implies 3-axis gyroscopes and accelerometers (a typical inertial measurement unit – IMU), 9 DOF refers to an IMU plus a compass, 10 DOF adds a barometer and 11 DOF usually adds a GPS receiver.

My trip to Büyükada Aka Prince Island – Istanbul

One of the most magnificent places that I’ve ever travelled is Büyükada aka Prince Island at Istanbul – Turkey.

The beauty of this place were the uniqueness of their architecture (Largest wooden houses) and mysterious history!.  What I liked the most about this beautiful Island was that they were using horse carriage for their entire transportation purposes, no matter whether it’s for touring the Island or any other logistic activities. Having said that you might just see one or two vehicles parked beside the police and fire departments obviously meant to be for emergency purposes.

The Prince Islands (Greek: Πριγκηπονήσια, Turkish: Prens Adaları, alternatively written as Princes’ Islands in which the “princes” are plural (meaning “Islands of the Princes”); or Kızıl Adalar (“Red Islands”) in Turkish); officially just Adalar (“Islands”), are an archipelago off the coast of Istanbul, Turkey, in the Sea of Marmara. The islands constitute the Adalar district of Istanbul Province. The mayor of the Adalar district is Atilla Aytaç (CHP).

They consist of four larger islands, Büyükada (“Big Island”) with an area of 5.46 km2 (2.11 sq mi), Heybeliada (“Saddlebag Island”) with an area of 2.4 km2 (0.93 sq mi), Burgazada (“Fortress Island”) with an area of 1.5 km2 (0.58 sq mi), Kınalıada (“Henna Island”) with an area of 1.3 km2 (0.50 sq mi), and five much smaller ones, Sedef Adası (“Mother-of-Pearl Island”) with an area of 0.157 km2 (0.061 sq mi), Yassıada (“Flat Island”) with an area of 0.05 km2 (0.019 sq mi), Sivriada (“Sharp Island”) with an area of 0.05 km2 (0.019 sq mi), Kaşık Adası (“Spoon Island”) with an area of 0.006 km2 (0.0023 sq mi), and Tavşan Adası (“Rabbit Island”) with an area of 0.004 km2 (0.0015 sq mi).

During the Byzantine period, princes and other royalty were exiled on the islands, and later members of the Ottoman sultans family were exiled there too, giving the islands their present name. They were taken by the Ottoman fleet during the siege of Constantinople in 1453. During the nineteenth century, the islands became a popular resort for Istanbul’s wealthy, and Victorian-era cottages and houses are still preserved on the largest of the Princes’ Islands.

The Halki seminary, formally the Theological School of Halki (Greek: Θεολογική Σχολή Χάλκης and Turkish: Ortodoks Ruhban Okulu), was founded on 1 October 1844 on the island of Halki (Turkish: Heybeliada), the second-largest of the Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara. It was the main school of theology of the Eastern Orthodox Church’s Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople until the Turkish parliament enacted a law banning private higher education institutions in 1971.

The theological school is located at the top of the island’s Hill of Hope, on the site of the Byzantine-era Monastery of the Holy Trinity. The premises of the school continue to be maintained by the monastery and are used to host conferences. It is possible to visit the island where it is located via boat in approximately one hour from the shore of Istanbul.

In 1912 on the islands lived 10 250 Greeks and 670 Turks. The islands have become more and more ethnically Turkish in character due to the influx of wealthy Turkish jetsetters, a process which began in the first days of the Turkish Republic when the British Yacht Club on Büyükada was appropriated as Anadolu Kulübü, for Turkish parliamentarians to enjoy Istanbul in the summer. The islands are an interesting anomaly because they allow for a very rare, albeit incomplete, insight into a multicultural society in modern Turkey, possibly akin to the multicultural society that once existed during the Ottoman Empire in places such as nearby Istanbul/Constantinople. Prior to the 1950s, each of the inhabited islands had significant communities of ethnic minorities of Turkey, which is now the case to a much smaller extent. Since the vast majority of the residents and visitors are Turkish, today their legacy is of cultural rather than demographic importance.

Drone Inspection, Videography and 3D Mapping

At VideXi Films for Drone Inspection we are using DJI Phantom 4 Pro which is capable to capture of 4K videography (cinema quality) footage.

To Inquire about our drone services you may contact VideXi Films drone service company at United States of America.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. UAVs are a component of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS); which include a UAV, a ground-based controller, and a system of communications between the two. The flight of UAVs may operate with various degrees of autonomy: either under remote control by a human operator or autonomously by onboard computers.

DJI Phantom 4 Pro, released in November 2016, has a three-axis stabilized camera with a 1-inch 20 MP CMOS sensor. It upgrades its obstacle avoidance with five directional sensors. The Phantom 4 Pro offers two remote controllers, one with a dedicated screen (Phantom 4 Pro+) and one without. It integrates an upgraded Light bridge HD video transmission system that adds 5.8 GHz transmission support and a maximum downlink video transmission range of 7 km. In addition – DJI released a set of Goggles, which can be used with various DJI equipment, including the Phantom 4 Pro, to allow First Person View (FPV) flying.
Although commercial use is still a legal gray area, several segments of industry are open to its usage including drone journalism, hurricane hunting, 3-D landscape mapping, nature protection, farming, search and rescue, aircraft inspection, tornado chasing, and lava lake exploration.Drones are also in entertainment and business. The Fox Broadcasting Company used Phantom 2 Vision+’s to promote 24 during San Diego Comic-Con International 2014.
